DIN TAI FUNG (XINYI)

This is the city’s most famous spot for xiao longbao, or Chinese dumplings. It is the original establishment that launched a dozen offshoots throughout Taipei and Asia. The steamed porkbuns are legendary, and the shrimp dim sum and housemade noodles are also outstanding. There are also vegetarian options on offer. Service is friendly and efficient. Come at off-peak hours to avoid an hour-long wait.

This upscale establishment serves up Shanghainese cuisine that is widely considered the best in Taipei.

Beautiful interiors, lovely lighting and Miles Davis (!) set the scene for the best traditional Japanese cuisine in Taiwan. Superb offerings include sushi and sashimi, whole fresh crab and seafood salad with ponzu sauce.

SILKS PALACE (IN THE NATIONALPALACE MUSEUM)

Good quality Dim Sum at lunchtime. Fried dishes are reportedly light and not greasy. Shanghai dumplings are especially good. Good service and very friendly to tourists. The menu ties in with the exhibits at the museum, thus making the meal a gastronomically delightful but also an educational experience

SHINYEH 101

The food represents the traditional dishes in Taiwan. Straightforward and delicious, a good alternative to the norm. A must try desert is the almond tofu. Locals are frequent patrons.

MERLOT CAFE & BISTRO

Small but cozy restaurant serving western and Italian cuisine and focusing on using fresh ingredients to create “clean” flavors. Offers a nice selection of wine to compliment food, has a variety of cold beers, and simple cocktails. Owner Bob is from California but has lived and worked in Taiwan now for 13 years. He provides friendly conversation and great food. For people visiting from western countries there is no problem asking for dishes to your specifications. Reservations recommended due to limited seating.
